“To Be Or Not To Be”

Fifty-nine years ago not long after learning that the first girl that I ever kissed had married the boy she picked over me three years earlier the summer before we began our sophomore year in high school, I despaired of living. Not yet even seventeen and life without that little girl seemed hopeless and devoid of any promise. Was I ever wrong with so many kisses awaiting and so very much to do and to be.

Shakespeare’s Prince of Denmark too faced the dark night of his soul and asked the question, “To be or not to be…” The great secret of finding a reason to live is doing something. Young people, old people, and everyone in between spend too much time in their own heads and as a favorite line from a favorite movie says, “That is not a safe neighborhood to spend too much time in.”

Doing gives us a reason to be. And doing something for others takes the focus off our own problems and gives direction to our lives. Today’s picture quote has three philosophers giving their take on life. The last one is meant to be funny, but ironically I think the Chairman of the Board nailed it. “Do Be Do Be Do.”

I am so glad and grateful that I stuck around for what has turned out to be a most excellent adventure in time and space. I hope you are enjoying yours. I can honestly say as James Blunt does in his song You’re Beautiful that “My Life is Brilliant…”
