No Milk!
I am a city boy and I have never milked a cow, still I have downed many a glass of milk and feasted on my share of butter and cheese. On an almost two year work assignment to Wisconsin, the state famous for its cheese, I saw some of the largest dairy farms in the nation. These farms were so large that they literally maintained two man-made mountains, one of feed and the other of manure, both so big it took skid-loaders to move the material to and from the huge barns full of cows in stalls where they were constantly kept, fed, water and milked. It all ran smoothly like a well-oiled machine.
Dairy farms with a few cows tended and milked by hand are just a distant memory in those parts. Often one encountered huge farm equipment on the highways maneuvering from field to field, tilling, planting, and harvesting corn, alfalfa, and other feed to produce the mountains required to sustain those dairy herds and make all that milk, butter, and cheese.
Someday like the circus elephants, cows may be freed from their servitude and those mountains of fed and manure will no longer be needed. Meat, milk, butter, and cheese will be manufactured in labs and not on dairy farms. That’ll be the day, you say. It will indeed, with energy as free as the sun and air and no child every having to say, “No milk today.”
