The Whole Story
So many of our stories are just snapshots that leave out the plight of those trampled in the European conquest of the New World. In addition to the millions of indigenous people killed and displaced millions more were stollen and shipped in chains to provide slave labor on plantations in the south and millions more poor immigrants worked for barely subsistence wages in mills and factories in the north. Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote of her family’s experiences as immigrant homesteaders in the Midwest.
The American story about working hard and getting ahead usually involves the hard work of others making even richer a privilege few. We need to tell the complete story. The Little House On The Prairie is just one of the many stories that make up our story, the whole story.
