Not That Different
I have over the years of my life marveled at how we seem to major on minor differences especially when it comes to religion, politics, and the brands that we prefer. In a recent Tom Hanks movie, A Man Called Otto, Tom plays Otto and Otto’s long time best friend is a Ford man while Otto is a Chevy man and after a long split Otto makes an effort at making up till he sees his former friend’s new car is a Toyota and that is just one bridge too far for Otto.
Minor religious differences often border on insanity. It is said that theologians once even hotly debated how many angels could sit on the head of a pin. That to me is “straining at a gnat and swallowing a camel.” Jesus was once asked if a rich man could enter heaven and he replied, “It is harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle.” One of the gates to the city of Jerusalem was called “The eye of a needle” because it was so small they had to unloaded the camels before they could pass through the gate.
The differences that keep us apart may seem insurmountable, but the truth is that we are just not that different you and me.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
