Think And Be Free
Some people allow themselves to be seduced and imprisoned by their own thoughts or those of others. The poet has written, “Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage.” The spirit ever soars no matter our circumstances and physical location if we free our minds and keep them free.
A favorite verse for those who like to memorize Bible verses is: “Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee.” Not a thy, thee, thou person? It is just an antiquated way of saying “you.” A phrase I have committed to memory but say to myself everyday in my daily mantra is: “May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in my sight, O Lord, my strength, my rock, and my redeemer.”
Our thoughts and words not only have the power to keep us prisoner but to set us and keep us free. The young people a generation ago used to say and loudly, “Free your mind and the rest will follow.” I recall a preacher saying many years ago now, “Thoughts like birds come to us. We cannot prevent them from flying over head but we can prevent them from building a nest in our hair.” I thought the remark particularly funny because that preacher was bald.
I leave you with one last quote from my friend Mike Dooley that he says and writes often and that I believe to be one of the great truths: “Thoughts become things, choose the good ones.” The same stones and iron bars that build prisons and cages can also be used to build roads and bridges to a better understanding of the wide and wonderful Universe around us and within us. Oh what thinks we can think.
