The Listening Ear

Many in my generation who went to war before soldiers were known to need ear protection on the rifle ranges suffer moderate to sever hearing loss in one or both ears. I am fortunate that my hearing loss is moderate compared to that of many other Vietnam era veterans. Sadly such hearing losses usually begins with difficulty hearing the higher pitches first. As my lovely and loving wife Linda has a soft and high pitched voice I often annoy her by asking her to repeat herself. Yet because I try to listen more closely I find that I hear her better than wait staff and sales people when we are out eating or shopping.

Some day either my ears will go completely or she will and I will need to strain no longer to make out the sweetest voice in the wide world. Neither of us is ready for either of those eventualities and are still in it for the long haul. In a little bit I will hear her say, “Good morning” and my day will really begin. It is getting light in the east and I hear birdsong.

Close your eyes and listen with me for a moment. Do you hear that still small voice? I hear it often say, “Don’t worry, Baby, everything will turn out alright.” Be still and tune out all those other voices. The listening ear was meant to hear the encouraging word.
