Rescue Me
We all at one time or another in our lives find ourselves in need of being rescued. It is said of our higher power that He/She is an ever present help in time of trouble. Today’s episode in the original Raggedy Ann stories has her rescuing Fido. The ancient Chinese taught that if you saved a person’s life that you are forever responsible for that life. Christians and other religious group teach that as well. We have encapsulated that teaching in an adage, “A Friend in need is a Friend indeed.” Some of our deepest and longest lasting relationships began as some sort of a rescue attempt.
The grateful heart sings, “Oh, Love that will not let me go, I rest my soul in thee.” This week we in the west, many of us, will celebrate the greatest story ever told. It is a love story about a rescue mission. Even those of us who have doubts about the authenticity of the story must admit that it nevertheless is a wonderful story of love and sacrifice.
We try to honor those who in service risk their lives for us and we memorialize those as heroes who die in that service. Our higher and best self is the true hero of this story and we cry out, “Rescue me.”
