Strange Dolls
There is a funny line, many to be sure, in the biopic movie about comedy stage performer Fanny Brice called Funny Girl. Fanny brings home the love of her life Nicky Arnstein to introduce him to her family and neighborhood friends and someone comments on how different Nicky is, but that he acts so familiar and says, “I think strangers ought to act strange don’t you?”
Another more widely quoted line about strangers is, “Strangers are only friends that we haven’t met yet.” We are often not as welcoming of strangers as Raggedy Ann is of the strange dolls and could all practice perhaps better the Bible admonition about being kind to strangers.
We have all experienced being the new student, the new hire, the new kid on the block and know how awkward and strange it feels to be the stranger the “other.” How glad and grateful we feel when anyone makes the effort to help us to feel a part of instead of feeling isolated and separated from the group.
One of my loving and lovely wife Linda’s favorite songs says, “Reach out an touch somebody’s hand, make this world a better place if you can.”
