Who and Whose You Are
There are many voices echoing in our hearts and minds at any given time, but among them there is but one we should listen to that is forever reminding us who and whose we truly are. Often life is like being lost in a house of mirrors where everywhere you look you see an image of yourself, yet only one of those images is the real you.
In one of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors, The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis, a man from a gray and sad city finds himself in a queue, a line, of people waiting to board a bus for a day trip to Heaven. The passengers are told that they can remain in Heaven if they choose and each one is met by someone from their past sent from the high country of Heaven to try to persuade them to stay.
Each chapter in the short little book is about a over heard conversation between a day tripper and his or her greeter. One of the saddest of these tales is about a husband being greeted by his wife of many years who has preceded him to the high country. He is accompanied by a tall handsome and rude fellow who tries to address the beautiful lady but she refuse to engage him in conversation, addressing all her remarks to the small man standing beside him. The big man is the little man’s ego and the longer and louder he talks the smaller the little man grows till finally the big man tucks him in his coat pocket and stomps back to the bus to await the return trip. The little man had listened so long to Ego’s lies that he had forgotten who and whose he was.
You are loved, you are loveable, you are altogether lovely for you are love personified. That is Who and Whose you are. Any voice who says otherwise is a liar and a fraud and unworthy of you time and attention. Listen carefully to that still small voice.
