Not That Different
The politicians and puppet masters, moved by the only true enemy of our souls, ole ego himself, would ever divide us pointing out our differences. They proclaim that our gang is always the right one, the true one, and that outsiders are not to be trusted. But as today’s children’s story and song say so well, we are just not that different.
The writer of our country’s Declaration of Independence reached beyond his privileged class to pen, “We hold these truths to be self-evident that we are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” Thomas Jefferson recognized that no king, class, or gang has the right to govern without the consent of the governed.
I think even ole Tom would have been a bit surprised that this experiment in Democracy has endured this long without revolution. Paramount to its success and longevity thus far has been this notion of “the common good” and “building a better union” based on extending those rights to more and more and not to just male white land owners.
Ego is the true enemy of Democracy more so than Fascism, Communism, or unchecked Capitalism. At the root of the failures of all three is the wrong-headed idea that a few individuals are better equipped to decide for everyone else. It is the “mad king idea” that the Declaration of Independence went on to expose in detail as it listed the colonists grievances against the king.
It is a key point to any Democracy this airing and addressing of our grievances and differences.
