Lest We Despair Of Living

Many religions including that of the Star Wars Jedi Knights warn us of the perils of the dark side. I am reminded of the young man who sang that his future was so bright that he had to wear shades.

We are warned against looking too long at the sun or of looking at the world through rose colored glasses, yet a world seen through dark glasses is equally distorted, damaging, and can lead to fear, to hate and to despair.

What if any vaccine is available to inoculate us against such dark despair? I believe it is this, to hold in our heart the knowledge that every good and perfect gift comes down from the father and mother of lights. Some years ago Rhonda Byrne shared The Secret to health, wealth, and happiness. It is in a word – gratitude.

We rob our own lives of joy, of health, of wealth, and of happiness by looking the gift horse in the mouth so to speak. Instead of being grateful for every good and perfect gift we stare into its mouth trying to find something wrong with it so that we may reject it and thereby rob ourselves of the present.

Lest we despair of living we must learn to see the good and perfect in every gift. It is there we need only look for it and learn to expect it always.
