“Winter Is Coming”

“Winter Is Coming”

That line was the catch phrase of the Stark Family in HBO’s long running Game of Thrones series. Winter was my mother’s least favorite season. She grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee and except for a few years she lived in Detroit, Michigan she spent her not quite sixty-nine year adventure in Chattanooga. Spring was her favorite season, then summer, followed by fall. I am sure she would have preferred it if she could have just hibernated through the winter months like bears do.

My mother was not alone in her lack of appreciation for winter. I have heard many people, mostly women, express a certain distain for the colder months. I like a change and having grown up with four equally divided season that has been my preference. My son Jonathan was born in Houston and has lived his thirty-two years here and would prefer to wear shorts and a tee shirts year round. He and his wife Lauren vacationed in Hawaii this past summer and he found the tropical climate there perfect.

Me, I am a fan of winter and found my years working on the road in Wyoming, Colorado, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota most refreshing. I learned quickly how to dress for outdoor work in sub-zero temperatures.

“Winter is coming” is no threat to me but a promise. “Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snow, lies the seed that with the sun’s love, in the spring, becomes the rose.”
