“Nothing To Fear But Fear Itself”

The great quote from Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s first inaugural speech was itself a quote marked in a book and suggested to him by his wife Eleanor. Wise Jedi Master Yoda taught young Jedi Luke Skywalker that fear leads to hate and hate to the dark side. The purveyors of fear have but one goal, to make us full of fear and hate.

It is far easier to build a following, a movement, based on fear and hate than it is on love. I like to remind my Christian friends that the New Testament word often translated sin come from a word that conveys the idea of “missing the mark.” Using that definition it is ridiculous to teach things like to fear or to hate even sin. Since we all miss the mark from time to time we would have to be afraid of and hate everyone, even and especially ourselves.

In one of my favorite quotes of one of my favorites writers, the late Louise Hay, she said and wrote many times: “Most if not all our problems can be traced to our lack of love for ourselves.” Technically the opposite of love is not hate but fear, but then as Yoda teaches we know where fear always leads.

Fear even of sin or missing the mark does not serve us but only leads to our believing the worst about ourselves and others. Civil War General Sherman is often quoted as saying, “War is hell.” To justify war we must believe the true enemy of our souls, Satan or ego, who as his/her name implies always would have us fear that our brothers and sisters are out to get us. The word Satan means “Accuser of the brethren.”

Jesus once told the brothers James and John, nicknamed The Sons of Thunder because they asked his permission to call down fire on some towns folk who had rejected their message, “You know not what spirit you are of.” Elsewhere in the New Testament the Apostle Paul writes: “God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

One last New Testament verse regarding fear. Jesus said, “Fear not for I am with you always.” To listen to the fear, hate, and war mongers is to believe Jesus lied and that that snake in the grass was right all along. I do not reject Jesus message of love just all the fear and hatred promoted by so called Christianity that make his message of love almost impossible to see.
