The Sweet Now And Now

The Sweet Now And Now

I grew up in a tradition where we were taught to simultaneously focus on the mythical “good old days”, and a wishful “sweet by and by”, while trying to tolerate “the nasty, now and now.” It has taken years for me to unlearn that outlook on life. Now, is what I try my best to focus on, for I believe that life is best lived in the moment.

In Dionne Warwick’s lovely song of some years ago I think she hits a perfect note with: “A fool will lose tomorrow looking back to yesterday” though some think the song is all about looking back, I think it is about making the most of the love we are experiencing now. Honoring each love as unique and wonderful does not keep us from experiencing all the love that our loving and infinite source has for us.

The best way to experience love is in the moment not with scrapbooks or hope chests, but caught up in the wild and wonderful now. Will there be bumps along the way? Indeed there will, but as someone wiser and more poetically gifted than I has said so well: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.”

Do not be distracted by memories that seem to live larger and sweeter than when they actually took place, nor by the draw of fantasy future events that may or may not ever materialize. Live this moment with your arms and hands open, your mouth, nose, ears, and eyes open to all the Universe has for you. As the wise gambler told his last traveling companion, “There’ll be time enough for counting when the dealing’s done.”

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
