Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush

Today’s children’s song selection is another classic and one I have sung my whole life. It does seem often that life is a lot like walking in circles and getting no where. I am reminded of the willful, stubborn, and fearful Children of Israel who having refused to trust the report of the two faithful spies who reported the Promise Land was filled with milk and honey and chose rather to believe the ten cowardly spies who could only report that there were giants in the land. For their lack of faith in him, God condemned a generation of faithless folks and their children to wander around in the wilderness till they all died off, forty years just going in circles, never allowed to see the Promise Land for themselves with their own eyes, only their children’s children.

After keeping the United States of America from splitting in two permanently over slavery and achieving the passage of the Thirteen Amendment to end slavery here, Mary Todd Lincoln asked her husband Abraham, “What would you liked to do now?” And he replied that he had always wanted to see the Holy Land and walk where David and Solomon had walked. He was shot and killed soon after that conversation at Ford’s Theater while watching the play, My American Cousin, by the staring actor, the Confederate sympathizer, John Wilkes Booth.

I like to think we all get to see the Promise Land no matter how many times we circle the wilderness or runway before landing. But, then there is so much to touch, taste, hear, and see here if we just open our hearts, minds, arms, hands, mouths, ears, and eyes to all the Universe has for us. “Thank you for this day, Spirit. I am Holy, I am Whole.” Or as a song from a bygone era says, “Will he go round in a circle? Will he fly high like a bird up in the sky?” Yes, indeed, till finally we all find our way Home.
