Testing, Testing, One, Two, Three…
It is incumbent for writers to write about what they know, or at least what we think we know. This week I am in testing mode for I had five additional online safety training modules and by my best count forty three OQs or Operator Qualification Knowledge exams to complete before starting my new work assignment and each of those has a Training module that must be completed and passed first. I did the five Safety trainings on Easter Sunday and a couple of the OQ Trainings and Knowledge modules. Yesterday and today I finished fifteen more couplets leaving me twenty-seven more. Wears me out just the telling of it. But on a positive note, it is a learning experience and the tests are good for three years. It is my hope that I can actually retire from my inspecting day job by then. It is a good plan.
There was a saying we used to type over and over in typing class way back in middle school over fifty years ago. It went something like this: “These are the times that try men’s souls.” It was a sexist time and I am sure most of us took the “men’s souls” to mean women’s souls as well. Time has always had a way of doing that and Space too. Time and Space, this dreamland playground, where we get to act out all our hopes and aspirations. It can seem like a test and very trying at times but it is not, it is a dream, our dream, tailor made for us by our higher self. “Delight thyself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
I do so love to hear people when asked, “How are you?” who cheerfully and smiling reply, “I am living the dream.” We all are actually, whether we are aware of it or not – nightmare or sweet dream we are each of us right in the sticky middle of it. To those who see their lives as a nightmare it seems a hard lesson, a difficult test. But to those of us who see our lives as sweet dreams they are to us just heaven with more and more to come.
May I share a secret I have learned? The rough patches are always precursors of the best adventures. All these trainings and online classes are my entree to a job that I have wanted back for several years now. But not as long as I have wanted to find a way to make a living writing. This blog is my practice and my university course in creative writing to prepare me for the choicest writing assignment of all. It is out there and it has my name it. I have licked it and it is mine.” Just like training for a ninety eight mile bike ride I am now prepared to write that great American Novel or Short Story or whatever.
For now I am still testing the microphone, “Testing, testing, one, two, three…” This ole world is yet going to hear more from The Man From Tennessee. I am on my way to Indiana in four more days. If I have not finished all my online tests by then I will just have to work on them on the way. Been there, done that. Be encouraged, dear friends, there are neater and sweeter dreams ahead.
