The Way You Look Tonight

The Way You Look Today

My mind and my life are full to overflowing with music and song lyrics. As I thought about what I might share with you, my friends, in today’s daily blog the words and the melody of a long ago love song came to me:

“Some day, when I’m awfully low

When the world is cold

I will feel a glow just thinking of you

And the way you look tonight.”

In the lovely but sometimes the confusion of the illusion that we call life we mistakenly think in terms of a beginning, a middle, and an end, we think our lives consist of a number of days when there is really only one – today, tonight, an eternal moment in time. We inhabit and are inhabited by a shared dream. It is His Dream, Her Dream, but it is also our dream and it can and should be a lucid dream. The dictionary defines lucid as:

1. easily understood; completely intelligible or comprehensible: a lucid explanation.

2. characterized by clear perception or understanding; rational or sane: a lucid moment in his madness.

3. shining or bright.

4. clear; pellucid; transparent

I like to add a little to that in my usage of lucid dreams, not just dreams that we are fully aware of but dreams that we can alter at will for that is I believe the way we are to live this dream called life as co-creators not just participants. There is a verse I have spent a lot of time thinking about over the past several years that says, “Delight yourself also in the LORD (The Creator, the beginning and end of all things) and He (She works just as well) will give you the desires of your heart.” If you wonder where your desires come from, they as do all things come from the Source. But that is not all, because to this knowing or lucid dream we contribute to the mix as well, that co-creator thing again. Who says life is a dream? Well, we have sung it since children in songs like:

Row, row, row your boat

Gently down the stream

Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily

Life is but a dream.

Life can not only be a sweet dream but a nightmare if we allow it to be so. Our life, our dream, is but a reflection of the thoughts we think and dwell on. We often give the weather forecasters a hard time for their inaccuracy and prophets and fortune tellers as well. But keep guessing the future and you are bound to get it right once in a while. The Bible tells us how to discern a false prophet or failed prognosticator quite easily. A true prophet’s predictions always come true. It is really not that difficult to predict tomorrow for it is but today reflecting back to us tomorrow what we thought today. It is simple really what we think on, dwell on today, becomes our today, tomorrow. “Do not be deceive for whatsoever we sow that shall we also reap.” Good or bad, happy or sad, this is our life, this is our dream.

And it is all about one day in a life – today, which again is but the sum total of the thoughts we thought about yesterday. Want to change your life? It is so easy, think a new thought today, a different thought than the thought you thought yesterday which made your today. I have quoted often the definition of insanity as: “Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” That is also true of our thinking. My friend Mike Dooley is always saying, “Thoughts become things, pick the best ones.”

All thoughts are not created equal and quite like our dreams there is an opposing force that is sometimes the source. And, no, I am not talking about an all powerful Devil, to me, a myth I no longer believe, but a puny little creature of our own making that pretends to be co-equal with the Almighty, called ego. Puny little ego is but the pretender to the throne of our heart, only our Higher Self can rightfully claim that seat. If we believe the loud mouthed little liar it is always to our hurt, but only temporally, temporarily in time, for the end of the story is already written: we awake from this dream sad, scary, or glad and wonderful, safe and sound in our parents’ house, in our own room, nonetheless but all the more for it.

Enjoy this today, this tonight, for we shall talk about it into eternity – what a time we had on our adventures in Time and Space.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
