“Don’t Confuse Me With The Facts I Have My Mind Made Up.”

“Don’t Confuse Me With The Facts I Have My Mind Made Up.”

Since we in the Cheyenne, Wyoming area have the past three days experienced the coldest and snowiest days thus far of this winter, I considered writing a piece on Manmade Global Warming. I know it is a subject about which there is much debate. But I fear as with many past controversies “money” plays a big role in which side of the issue many take.

When I was a boy in the nineteen fifties almost everybody smoked. All the favorite TV show celebrities endorsed smoking and cigarette companies were their sponsors. Doctors promoted cigarettes. I was watching one of my favorite movies, Hearts In Atlantis, on Sunday and the mother in the movie is told by her eleven year old son when he see her smoking and says you promised that you would quite, “Oh these are Kools, they are hardly cigarettes at all.” Even the most adamant tobacco defenders admit we were lied to by the tobacco companies. Lung cancer, emphysema, heart disease and a host of other smoking related illnesses have taken a great toll but made the tobacco companies rich.

Tobacco companies are not the only ones who lied to us about their products being safe to get rich. The lead companies too, who made lead water pipes, because they were cheap said lead was safe, but it has been known since Roman days that lead plumbing cheap as it was even then came with a terrible price to pay. Some historians even suspect that lead plumbing poisoning was a greater cause of the fall of the Roman Empire than were the Barbarians. Lead causes thinking problems and lowers the I.Q. in adults and especially in children. Perhaps the crazy acting (I am thinking of Nero but there were many others) emperors of Roman drank the water from their fabulously plumbed palaces at their peril and that if their people.

Asbestos used to be in almost everything and was marketed as a “miracle” product, cheap, fire-proof, and safe. Why even baby clothes were made containing asbestos fibers. Who would not want to keep their babies safe in the event of fire. But long before the general public knew of the dangers of asbestos the makers knew but fought the science with expensive campaigns to make us doubt the science and believe the commercials.

The controversies over Manmade Global Warming and the need for better Gun Control are, in my opinions quite similar if not identical to the previous controversies mentioned above and many others. They fall into the “Do not confuse me with the facts, I have my mind made up” category. Friends can agree to disagree about many things but we still have an obligation to “face the facts” and not allow ourselves to be continually duped by those who care a lot more about our money than our well being.

David White
