Christmas In July
Quite a few years ago now, I recall a July 25th that fell on a Sunday. I was, at the time, working at a church in hot Houston, Texas that had quite a large bus ministry to children. I was an unpaid children’s pastor. I say unpaid but that is not really true for nothing you every do to add to the fun, joy, and happiness of others especially the child in them is ever without reimbursement in some form even if is just a smile or the light in their eyes. This particular July 25th, the Bus Minister, had planned a Christmas in July theme for the day with a special visit from you know who.
That’s right in the hot heat of that very hot Houston day I donned a Santa suit complete with long hair, beard, hat, and pillows to fill out the red flannel suit. My boots were literally filled with sweat but my smile and Ho Ho Ho’s were sincere if heat exhausted. The kids of all ages and I had a ball. I got so sick afterwards that I missed several days from work with the flu but did get to see Caitlyn Marie Jenner, then known as Bruce Jenner, win the Olympic gold metal for the decathlon at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada. See, there is always a reward if we look for it even in the most unusual places and circumstances.
Merry Christmas in July, everyone. Here are a couple of recycled Mockingbird songs of the season.
