Princesses Becoming Generals

It is my hope that when more of them do, and I have no doubt that women are often more qualified than men for positions of leadership, that there will be fewer and fewer deployments of troops to fight senseless wars. Ego wrote, “There will always be wars and rumors of wars.” probably some silly man. Love wrote, “We are more than conquerors through Him/Her that loved us.” We each get to decide what we believe, and what we accept as our “truth.”

As a young man in South Vietnam I wrote a poem that actually got published in the Pacific Stars And Stripes newspaper in a column called Boondocks Bards that had these lines that I still remember:

“Oh, that wars would end

And that men did not die

That lovers did not part

And mothers did not cry.”

Wars do not just kill men, they never did but countless women and children as well and even worse than that, wars leave millions more broken and disillusioned and even a far greater number to grieve the lost and the brokenness of those that survive the hell of war – none are unscathed. Even though I was guided, guarded, and protected, was never shot at nor had to shoot at anyone else, I still carry internal scars from my participation in so sorry a business as war. Over a year ago I saw the epic WW II War movie directed by Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge. It has some gory battle scenes but is the story of a shining young man determined to save lives and not to take them. Would to Heaven there were millions more like him and princesses turned into generals to draw us back from the always it seems looming brink of war.
