Samantha’s Twelve Years

Blog 235 – 02.22.2016

When my grown son was still a boy we decided that it would be a good thing for him to have a dog. We bought a pure bred Beagle locally and she came to live with us just shortly after she was weaned. We had her from a puppy or more accurately she had us. We were her pack, her family and she was family to us. I wrote the following poem to commemorate her passing. I hope you will find it encouraging this show of affection for an animal. Many believe that we should not waste our affection on animals that there are too many people who need it. Often it is easier to love an animal than a person. For all the mess and bother they can sometimes be animals are way less messy and way less heart breaking than people, not to mention often more loyal and loving.

Samantha’s Twelve Years

                                  By David White 8.16.14

Twelve years you graced our lives

From a puppy to a senior lady

Your welcome shows and oft’ escapes

Made us sure you were our baby.

                           Twelve years – a beagle’s lifetime

Half of Jon’s more than a fifth for mom and dad

                           Who freely and firmly declare

You’re the best damned dog we ever had.

                           We will remember you

Not with tears but many smiles

As we recall the happy times

And all your furry loving wiles.

                           All dogs go to heaven

Or so Jon’s childhood movie said

You gave us a taste of heaven

Each time we petted your tummy or patted your head.

                           See you later, Sweet Samantha.

We see you in a painless place

With lots of lovely smells to smell

And plenty of squirrels and rabbits to chase.
