I have a friend that I met in Wisconsin some years ago that follows this blog and when I venture into the political realm she comments about my being on my soap box. Well, I saw this Cher picture quote and figured I would step up on that soap box again.

When I was a young man and very much a part of an evangelical fundamentalist church that I was raised in, I was Pro-Life and prayed with those like minded folks that Roe V. Wade would one day be reversed. Be careful what you ask for.

I changed my opinion mid-life on the abortion issue. I left that evangelical fundamentalist church and rejected most everything I was taught to believe. I found that I had never honestly questioned whether those beliefs were serving me, or the good of the Universe, or anyone really.

Women and children for much of our history have been considered property to be used and abused as their man thought best. I do not believe that was ever true. The U.S. Constitution says, “All men are created equal with certain inalienable rights among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” The very man who penned that phrase did not believe “all men” but only property owning males like himself. And he not only did not believe women had any such rights, he believed a woman’s primary purpose was to make babies. After he killed his young wife making babies, he made many more with one of her slave girls. Rich white guys by and large still believe that they get to choose how many babies and who has them for them. Isn’t that so, Elon?

Women have a right to choose whether they want to have a baby or not. And no man has a right to force her to. Susan Collins will I hope be ending her long career as a Senator from Maine. Like most politicians she promised she’d only serve two terms. She lied. She promised she’s represent the voters of her state. She lied. She promised she’d fight for a woman’s right to choose. She lied. The people of Maine remember that it was her vote that confirmed Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court because he told her Roe V. Wade was settled law. He lied and she knew he was lying, everyone did. When he was a young man he forced himself on a young woman. He was nominated by Donald Trump to the court, go figure.

You tell ‘em Cher, it is high time, a woman’s right to choose was explained and you did so well.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David James White
