Flying Low

I still recall the excitement, the thrill, and the freedom I experienced the first time I rode a bike without training wheels as a small boy. The wind in my face felt alike I was flying low. This morning I rode my bike instead of going for a walk and the cool breeze in my face reminded of my first flight.

The words of a song that I learned as a child come to me: “Some glad morning when this life is o’re, I’ll fly away…” For much of my childhood and youth around noon they used to show an Air Force recruiting commercial on one of the local TV stations in Chattanooga, where I grew up. The commercial consisted of a jet aircraft soaring through the clouds while someone read the poem High Flight written by a World War One British pilot.

Someday my spirit will, I believe, take its leave of this body that weighs me down and keeps my feet on the ground. That is, of course, unless I am flying low on my bike.
