How To Deal

Hamlet’s famous soliloquy about suicide asks whether it is nobler to suffer the slings and arrows or to just end it all. How do we deal with the bumps in the road, the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune? The Serenity Prayer offers three of the most important things needed to deal with the troubles presented to us.

The dictionary defines serenity:

Staying serene, calm, and tranquil during the troubling times that come to us all, accepting the things we cannot change, and having the courage to change the things we can along with the wisdom to know the difference is an excellent way to deal with difficulty.

Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem, IF, begins with the lines:

“If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you.” If we can serenely accept what we cannot change, courageously change the things we can, and wisely know the difference, well then, my friends, we can deal with whatever life throws at us.
