We Liked Ike

The first President I remember was Dwight D. Eisenhower elected in 1952 and serving till January of 1960. He was at the time the oldest President ever elected and he was succeeded by the youngest at the time John F. Kennedy. Both political parties approached the famous World War Two commanding general to run for the high office after the war. He chose to run as a Republican.

Our current “office holder” likes to refer to the Republicans that have opposed him ever so slightly as RHINO(s) “Republicans In Name Only.” Many longtime Republicans including the late Linsey Graham and Texas junior Senator Ted Cruz predicted that if “the real Rhino” got the Presidential nomination in 2016 that he would ruin the Republican Party. Of course after he did, they along many who said they never would kissed his ring sold what was left of their souls. When on January 6th, 2021 after being soundly defeated in his reelection bid he fomented an insurrection to attack the Capitol to try to prevent the ceremonial counting of the electoral votes attempting thereby to prevent the peace transfer of power, many Republicans law makers who had feared for their own safety condemned his treason only to refuse to vote to convict him for his heinous acts – RHINO’s indeed. The only Republican Senator who voted to convict him in his second impeachment trial was primaried this spring.

President Eisenhower predicted that the political party who failed to deliver for the people would eventually die in obscurity. I do not think even he envisioned that the party he chose would be taken over by a self-interested sociopathic narcissist that could not even find it in himself to pretend to care about health care and economic welfare of his people.

“We Like Ike” was the political slogan that helped get Eisenhower get elected in 1952 and reelected in 1956. I think even MAGA is beginning to realize that a man who always puts himself first is and has never been a Republican nor a public servant is pretty hard to like.
