Affordable Health Care

The reason that Republicans fought so hard against the Affordable Care Act is the same reason they have tried for the better part of a century to end Social Security. When the American people get a chance to see a good idea working it is hard to take it away.

Our current President recently said, “We can’t afford child care, we can’t afford health care.” But we can afford waste and corruption like no other administration before and we can afford another senseless and seemingly endless war?

Why is it that the political party that once touted itself as the most fiscally responsible is the party that leaves the biggest economic messes for the other party to clean up. When I as a young man considered myself a Republican I has a work friend who was a life-long Democrat who said that historically the economy always contracted during Republican control and flourished when the Democrats were in charge.

Last year, the first of his second term, President Donald Trump created DOGE, the Department Of Government Efficiency, and put a rich man from South Africa in charge. Elon Musk promised that DOGE would save us 2 Trillion dollars. The savings they reported were about 310 Billion, but after checking the figure appears to be far less and the country is still reeling from the loss of critical federal personnel and services that were ended by DOGE’s massive and indiscriminate layoffs.

Heath care is still a problem with the cost continually rising and the American people paying more and more for less and less. Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are three of best investments our country ever made in its people. Yet those programs always seem to be on the chopping block. 

I do not claim to have all the answers to our current economic woes, yet I do know that Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid have made and continue to make a positive difference in the lives of many Americans. Instead of cutting those programs we would better serve our country and its people by extending those programs to many more people who could benefit from them.

I think Medicare For All is an idea whose time has come.
