The M&J and S&H Green Stamps

I grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee and remember the grocery store called the M&J which stood for Mulkey and Jackson and S & H Green Stamps which in my case stood for one of the best Christmas presents that I ever got, a fire hydrant red Buddy L firetruck with an extension ladder.

The M&J pictured today was located on Cherokee Blvd., but the one I remember most was on Main Street at Hotzclaw. I was there in the mid 1950’s for the Grand Opening. It was a big deal with the famous Budweiser Beer Wagon and the Clydesdales there to launch the new store.

Times change and like some many things the M&J and S&H Green stamps disappeared fifty years ago, but for those of those who knew them the fond memories remain. To paraphrase the Beatles song, “There are faces and places I remember all my life…”
