Danny Boy

One of my favorite Irish ballads to hear and to sing is Daddy Boy. It’s is a song of love, loss, and remembrance. The potato famine of the early eighteenth hundreds sent a way of poor and hungry Irish immigrants to our shores hoping for a better life. They were not welcomed with open arms, but found their place in this country and our history is richer for their contribution. We are a land of immigrants. To deny that is to deny our birthright.

We the People was never intended to mean just WASP’s (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants) as the KKK and other white supremacy groups claim. Those they would deny are true Americans are our core constituency and each new wave of immigrants have made this country great and greater still. To deny that is to deny our true purpose and destiny as a nation. If we have any hope of lasting as a nation for a thousand years it will be the past, current and future waves of immigrants that make that possible.

In a couple of weeks we will celebrate our two hundred and fiftieth birthday. Red, white, and blue will be everywhere as will red, and yellow, black, brown and white – our true colors.
