Lest We Forget

Memorial Day in the U.S.A. Is a day that we set aside to honor those who died in military service. This tradition began after the Civil War and was originally called Decoration Day because people decorated the graves of the soldiers who died in the war with flowers and flags. That tradition continues today and for many years it has been a federal holiday.

The last words of Lincoln’s Gettysburg address are still as appropriate as the were when he delivered them over a hundred and fifty years ago:

“…We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation, under God, shall have new birth of freedom – and that the government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

President Lincoln himself was one of the casualties of that terrible war that almost tore asunder this great nation. On this day we honor those who “gave their last full measure of devotion” to the cause of freedom, of liberty, and of justice for all – not just for a few rich old white dudes, but for all the people no matter their net worth, race, creed, or color.
