The Great White Lie – “I Am Better Than You”
White Supremacy and Christian Nationalism have their roots in the same great lie – “I am better than you.” I have not considered myself a Christian for many years (Too many Christians think they are God’s chosen people and that they are better than everyone else)and yet I still respect those who try to live by what I have long believed is the core teaching of Jesus expressed in Matthew Chapter 25 in a parable that he purportedly told on the Mount of Olives shortly before his crucifixion:

Jesus was neither a White Supremacist nor a Christian Nationalist. He was by all accounts a brown skinned Jew who publicly proclaimed that his kingdom was not of this world. His clear message was one of love for those he referred to as “the least of these my brethren” – the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick, the prisoner. He identified with the marginalized and made it clear that our treatment of them was a clear indication of the love in our hearts.
A young Democrat Texas State Representative, James Talarico is running for the U.S. Senate. Both the current Conservative Republican Senator John Cornyn and the Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who just this week received President Trumps endorsement over Cornyn in the Republican Primary runoff, call themselves Christians. Their brand of Christianity is similar to that of Donald Trump, politically expedient, anti-immigrant, favoring the rich and powerful over the poor and powerless. They seem to believe and act like they think they are better than the rest of us and are counting on the best man to win. I, on the other hand, hope the most loving man wins. In this current three way race I think that man is thirty-seven year old James Talarico.
Some years ago a young recently elected Senator from Illinois ran and was elected President for two terms. I dream that might happen again with James Talarico. He does not talk or act like he thinks that he is better than anyone else but seems genuinely interested in doing right by everyone not just the rich and powerful. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Texans decided to elect a young man who could make a real difference in Washington.
