The Tooth The Whole Tooth
The rest of that parody of the swearing-in before testifying in court oath goes, “… and nothing but the truth.” Making knowingly false statements or falsely answering questions after taking such an oath leaves one open to be charged with the serious crime of perjury. Judges have little patience with “alternate facts” or claims of “fake news” in the courtroom and jurors are instructed to consider carefully the facts of the trial before rendering an impartial verdict.
For any law that pronounces any act a crime to be enforceable it must have teeth. Law and order television shows have long been quite popular for they deal with this process of trying to figure out what are the true facts of any case. Do lawyers, judges, and juries always get it right? Hardly, but the right to a fair and speedy trial before a jury of one’s peers is a sacred right and an important pillar of a truly civilized society.
One Gospel writer’s account of the trial of Jesus has him standing before the Roman Governor Pontus Pilate where he had been sent by the Jewish Sanhedrin for under Roman Rule they had no authority to condemn him to death. Pilate was a pragmatic politician and had little patience with religious questions regarding what is true. Indeed everyone thinks what they believe is true and yet law is supposed to deal with provable demonstrably facts and not religious faith.
Per the account, Pilate’s judgement after questioning Jesus was, “I find no fault with this man.” And he would have therefore set him free but the Jewish rulers incited the crowd to shout as one, “You are not Caesar’s friend if you let him go for he claims to be king and there is no king but Caesar. Crucify him, Crucify him.” Pilate publicly washed his hands of the mockery of a trial, yet nevertheless bound Jesus and ordered a Roman detail to march him through the city to the hill called Golgotha, there to be crucified. It was customary to post the condemn’s charges so Pilate ordered a sign to be nailed above Jesus’ head that read in three languages, Hebrew, Latin, and Greek: “Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews.” The Jewish leaders complained saying it should read “he claims to be King of the Jews” but Pilate refused to change the charges… the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth. The Psalmists asks, “Who is the king of glory?” The answer I think most true is the true Trinity. He/She/We is and are the king of glory.
