Take This Sinking Boat And Point It Hope

On the last Father’s Day mixed CD that my daughter Emily made for me before her death at the age of thirty-two almost eleven years ago is the song containing the words above. Our bodies are often referred to as housing our spirits or souls, but I think boats or travel trailers would be more appropriate vessels because we are time and space travelers.

For our first nine months or so we travel inside our mothers making them sea sick many a morning. My first walk with Emily I celebrated with a poem and a blog by that name that I include in the little book that I wrote about her called, Emily, The Little Girl Who Sang Her Song To Anyone Who Came Along.

More than a few old vaudevillians used to strike up the band at the end of their act with the line, “A little traveling music please.” Shakespeare wrote, “We are all like actors on a stage.” I prefer the imagery of boat pilots captaining our aging craft through uncharted water. The waters may indeed be uncharted and the worthiness of the craft especially toward the end of the journey in question, yet all adventuresome spirits know that all we need is a ship and a star to steer her by.
