A Look Behind, A Look Ahead

Today is the last day of February 2023. A year ago on this date I did not see how I was going to deal with the biggest problem that I had ever encountered. Today I am looking forward to a leap year next year wondering what new problems, challenges, the year ahead will hold. I am assured that no burden will be laid upon me too heavy to bear but that with the challenges will come the strength to prevail. I have read the end of the book. Spoiler alert : We win, for we are more than conquerors through love.

Truly not by might, nor by power, nor even by faith, but through love we prevail. It is the excellent way that supersedes all others. It is in the words of Huey Newton and The News song Power of Love, “Stronger and harder than a bad girl’s dream.” And having gratefully known a bad girl or two that is some pretty tough stuff. Long time bad girl, Betty White, was a tough cookie, tough enough to make it to the top of a man dominated, produced and directed field and to stay their till check out time.

Bad boys come and go and even good girls too but the bad girls captive our hearts and minds always. The woman at the well, the woman caught in adultery, the woman who wash the feet of Jesus with her hair in the New Testament and even in the sacred line in the Old Testament, the harlot Rahab, Tamar the wife of Judah’s two sons who died without child, and Ruth, Naomi’s daughter-in-law who became David’s grandma are among the women we remember most.

Today I look back to a year gone by and to a year ahead grateful that bad girls still dream and act on those dreams for did they not the race would have died out ages ago and what would be the fun in that. Sing it Cyndi , “Girls just wanna have fun, oh girls just wanna have fun.”
