Mistakes Are How We Learn

The old joke goes, “I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.” I read some years ago that the seeming overnight and phenomenal sound of the Beatles came out of their early touring in Germany where they played eight hour sets together. Their overnight success was hardly that but over ten thousand hours of practice together paid off. It has long been considered the norm for the best performers to spend hours daily practicing and rehearsing before each performance. Wanna get good at anything? You have to make a lot of mistakes first.

Instead of thinking of mistakes as failures we would be more accurate to consider them lessons. I read a management book once that truly successful managers are not afraid of making decisions nor of making mistakes. Making a lot of mistakes and learning from them is the secret of success in art, in business, and in our personal lives. Thinking there is some short cut or work around is what I call “magical thinking.”

Making our dreams come true is a process and though I happen to believe that a loving and benevolent Universe always has our back and does the heavy lifting we still have an important part in the process. And that is discovering what we really want, focusing in on that, and taking steps in that direction.

Will there be missed turns and mistakes made along the way? Count on it. These are an important part of the adventure filled full with seeming mistakes but more appropriately lessons learned.
