No Matter What

No Matter What

“I know my love will last forever, no matter what.” Yesterday I watched workers demolish the house next to ours. The house was constructed just a few years before my wife and I were born. Our whole neighbor of Oak Forest was built new in the late nineteen forties as housing for returning World War Two vets, for them and their budding new families. Only a few of the original houses still stand, most have been replaced by new two and three story structures. I am thinking of the line, “When this earthly house by death shall be dissolved we have a house not made of hands.” I believe that more enduring than the pyramids, or the Great Wall of China, is love. “And in the end, the love we take is equal to the love we make.”

Some years ago in the romantic comedy “Notting Hill” which paired Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, I first heard the song “No Matter What” and it’s words and music touched my heart. In life we are sorely tempted to think that houses and lands are permanent, that power and money bring true happiness. But alas they are not and they do not. To quote an old Gene Pitney love song, “Only love can break a heart, and only love can mend it again.”

I wish you a heathy happy life with clothing, shelter, and enough to eat and drink, but more than this I wish you what matters most, I wish you love.
