Who Knew?
One of the more lame promises of our former President was that we as a country would experience so much winning that we would get sick of it. He still finds it hard to believe that he lost the last Presidential election and that a majority of the people just got sick of his lies. Who knew that even the great conman would buy into his own con?
I understand that many are still under his spell and truly believe what this country needs is not democracy but a strongman. Our rebellion from Mad King George almost two-hundred and fifty years ago, that we called a revolution, was a big step away from the monarchy. The United Kingdom recently lost a beloved queen of seventy years, Queen Elizabeth the Second. She was the longest reigning monarch they ever had and probably ever will. A great part of her appeal was that she did not interfere with the democratic government, but played her limited role to almost perfection. I remains to be seen if her son, Charles the Third, never very popular with the people, who loved his first wife Princess Diana and still do these many years after their divorce and her untimely death, better than they ever did or will him, will be the last monarch of the UK.
Who knew that pretty little queen would end up reigning so long or that her successor would ascend to the throne after her seventy year reign already in his seventies? Who knew that this country would go from eight years of having our first President of color, a young, articulate, vibrant, and inspiring leader who embodied hope, to an old white guy who peddled and still does, lies and fear? Well, some did and tried to warn us. Bill Maher and Michael Moore were two more outspoken ones.
Last Friday’s episode of Bill Maher’s Real Time began with a video interview with his ole pal Michael Moore. Mr. Moore did most of the talking (he usually does when given the chance) and he expressed his view that the pollsters, pundits, and handicappers of the mid-term donkey and elephant races have it all wrong again. He went so far as to thank the U.S. Supreme Court for striking down Row v. Wade and in the process energizing and encouraging more women and young people to vote than have ever registered before. Michael Moore believes that the results of the mid-term election more than any of the legal troubles Ole DJ is having to date will be as Toto pulling back the curtain on the Wizard of Oz, and that we will not longer pay any attention to the little man behind the curtain.
I believe Michael Francis Moore, famed documentary maker, born April 23, 1954 in Flint, Michigan has been right about a lot of things. I hope and am encouraged to believe that he is right yet again. We shall see.
