That’s What Friends Are For

There is an old adage that says, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” And it is true that it is in times of trouble that our true friends reveal themselves.” Some years ago when I was experiencing the most excruciating pain of my life my best friend was there for me and made me realize more than I ever had before that that was the kind of friend I wanted to be.

Friends make time for you and are there for you when you need them most. The light of friendship shines brightest in the darkest places and at those most desperate times in our lives. I saw my wife smile and her eyes sparkle as she greeted her “best friend” yesterday. It is all to easy to lose touch with the people most important in our lives, those we have shared so many good times and bad times with together that just seeing them triggers an avalanche of precious memories.

As I heard a dear little red-haired boy shared with is grandma whom he always called “Mommy” (she was the only mommy he ever knew) when he heard her say to someone that it was hard for her to make friends: “Making friends is easy, Mommy, all you have to do is act friendly.”

Friends have a knack for always knowing how to act and for showing up when we need them the most. Emergency responders are often regaled as heroes, but friends are the true heroes in our lives, ever at the ready to respond when we need them the most.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White

Thank You For Being A Friend
