What Is Your Reality
We are all of us at times forced to face realities that shake us to our very core. There was a phrase that we were taught to type over and over again in typing class in middle school many many years ago. It is a line from American patriot Thomas Paine’s famous pamphlet, Common Sense. It goes: “These are the times that try men’s souls.” Women’s too I am sure.
Many who suffer such traumatic events are never the same, but retreat into some kind of protective shell mentally or resort to drugs or alcohol to numb the never ending pain. I do not judge anyone who does so. I have not faced what they have faced and only the foolish believe they are stronger, wiser, and more equipped or capable of facing head-on whatever might come. A poet once wrote of the human condition, “We have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency might be of God.” I spent almost twenty years in the middle of this almost seventy-two year adventure trying to be an atheist. But seeking to know more about the secret to a happier more fulfilling life I read a brief paper on the subject that said, “For this to work for you, you have to acknowledge a higher power, but if that is a problem for you just think of your higher power as your highest best self.”
For some years now I have done just that. My loving and infinite source is the bigger, better, best me. Little me still stubs my toe often and still trips over many things and still finds situations that come up daunting if not impossible to deal with, but I have learned to be “glad and grateful that everything that I could ever want or need is already mine and coming to me at just the right time and in just the right way from my loving and infinite source.”
Some may think such an approach to life is completely and utterly insane. To me though it gives me a buffer and an ability to bend without breaking when those trying times come and they always do for all of us. How I wish this “secret” was more easily transferable to others especially those near and dear, but alas it is a “secret” we must all discover and accept or reject on our own terms.
In these troubled times it is my hope you will find the strength, the endurance, the flexible, the wisdom you need to bend but not break.
“These are the times that try men’s souls (Women’s too.)”
