This Happy Gift
Blog 2285 – 01.23.2022
Hard and long as we pursue happiness, the true gift of life often evades us or we misunderstand it. The gift we are looking for is not to be found in religion, politics or any other person or thing. The one true gift that was tailor made for us, is to be found in ourself alone. The cartoon character Pogo once said, “We have discovered the enemy and it is us” or words to that effect.
Pogo I think, or the author of the strip, was referring to that creature we brought into existence, ego, and not our true self. In one of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors, C.S. Lewis, The Great Divorce, tells the story of a bus day trip from Grey Town to Heavenly Country where all the souls aboard are met by someone from their past who tries to talk them into staying. Surprisingly most of those attempts fail.
In one such encounter a large man is met by the small loving woman who was his wife in life. He has with him a small quiet little man and you notice throughout their exchanges that she is talking not to the big fellow, but the little man beside him. There is love in her eyes and voice for the the little man as the big one does all the talking on that side of the conversation. The little man gets smaller and smaller till finally he is the size of a pocket watch on a chain and the big fellow just drops him into the breast pocket of his coat and struts off back to the bus to await the ride back to Grey Town.
We must not allow our egos to grow so large that we live out our quiet miserable little lives in their shadows. It is we that are the great gift that I believe the often quoted and as often misunderstood Bible verse, John 3:16 speaks of:
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only birthed child that whosoever believes in Him/Her/Them shall not die but live forever.”
God it seems has only One Child and He/She/We are it, The Gift, he gave the world, to save it and set things straight, that satan or ego had skewed so badly that we have come to believe that he/she is in-charge and not He/She/We.
Look long and hard into the mirror and see the greatest gift of all staring back at you.
