Those Good Old Dreams

Pinocchio’s conscience, Jiminy Cricket sang, “When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are. When you wish upon a star your dreams come true.” I love the response some positive folks give when asked the question, “How are you?” They just smile their biggest brightest smile and say, “Living the dream!”

I believe that the Universe is in the business of making all our dreams come true. And business is always booming. The trouble for most of us lies in our inability to focus on our highest and best dreams, choosing rather to focus on our nightmares. My friend Mike Dooley likes to say, “Thoughts become things, choose the best ones.”

Today’s reality was yesterday’s dream. Don’t give up on your sweetest dreams. The darkest night is filled with the light of yesterday’s stars to remind us that even with something as fast as light there is always a lag.

I often share a favorite song from my daughter Emily’s childhood record album The Music Machine: “Peace is when the wind stops blowing, peace is when the sun in showing, knowing that my daddy’s home, God gives me peace.” I recall crying as a boy because my dad was away most evenings on the road as he was briefly a long distance trucker. Dad loved that job, but he loved his wife and boys more and so he gave up that better paying job to work locally for less so he come home to us each night. One of my daddy’s highest and best dreams was the one he shared with my mom when she asked him as he proposed, “Why do you want to marry me?” He replied, “It looks like to me that you need someone and I want a home.” Maybe those were not the most romantic or poetic words, but they were real, from his heart, and backed with years of thought.

My daddy’s dream came true as do all our dreams. Another expression I particularly like far more than “Pray for me.” is “Think Good Thoughts.” Visualization is seeing with our mind what we want to happen. Ou higher self, our subconscious, the God of the Universe, aligns the stars to make all our dreams come true. It is up to us to keep focused on those good old dreams and not allow our arch and only enemy, old ego, to get and keep us thinking about all that can and usually does go wrong if all we do is continually think about worse case scenarios.

I remember the old joke about the lady who went to her doctor for thirty years telling him that she thought she had cancer, but each time the tests said she did not. After thirty years the doctor sadly had to agree with her diagnosis. The determined to have it her way lady smiled and said, “See, I told you so.”

Another saying goes, “Thinking or wishing cannot not make it so.” But can’t it? What we believe is true and the stars align to make it so. Here’s to making those good old dreams come true and letting go all those nightmares, past and present, before they come true too.
