Charlotte’s Web – Chapter 8

Bad news is something none of us cares to hear, but from time to time in life it is unavoidable and all the positive thinking in the world cannot change that fact. Today Wilbur learns the bad new that he is being fattened up for slaughter, but his friend Charlotte’s has other plans.

Whether you believe it to be the greatest story ever told or not or whether you accept some or all of it as the Gospel, the story of a god who loved his creation so much that he would die in it’s place is a very moving story. Jesus said, “No greater love has any man than to lay down his life for his friends.” Our biggest heroes are always those who are willing to put themselves in harms way for us.

It is easy to become cynical in a world of con men and con women, where everyone seems to be playing some angle to their own benefit, and to close our hearts and minds. Almost every time my phone rings of late it is some new scam someone has come up with to take advantage of me, but for all it’s sham I still believe this is a wonderful world full of love and hope. Even the con men and women need love and will respond to it.

In the face of those who would play on our fears for their own financial gain or some advantage over us we can still open our hearts where our true treasure resides. Simon Peter, Jesus’s hard headed but soft hearted friend once said to a beggar begging alms, “Silver and gold have I none but such as I have I give.” There was a popular song in my youth that said, “What the world needs now is love sweet love, no not just for one but for everyone.” For all the changes that I have seen in my thus far seventy year adventure that has not changed. Sing it Engelbert Dave.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
