The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – Chapter 16
Traveling in the company of friends once again, this book has a much longer ending than the movie, and Dorothy must be patient for the way home to be revealed to her. Like many young people we are often so in a hurry to get to our desired destination that we pay little attention to the rest of the journey. How quickly we forget the joy and mystery we once knew as small children discovering the wonder of each step along our way. The Wonderful Wizard is but one of the many wonders that Dorothy discovers along her way from Kansas to Oz and back.
I dare say that every step along what I can only hope was a long and happy life back in Kansas was forever informed by the thrill of this adventure traveling with friends. Tomorrow, I will read the last two chapters of the book. I understand that the world has become enamored by sound bites and quick answers and that most of us have very short attention spans, too short to sit still for even a single chapter let alone a book of several chapters, but some of my best memories from elementary school are of teachers who took the time to read entire books to the class one chapter a day. I did not enjoy much of the other class work in school, but I really enjoyed that.
Those of you who, like I was, were slow readers and came later in life to really develop a love of reading I hope will come to discover that the best stories take time to tell. I was not always patient with my dad’s long winded stories but I came to realize over time that he was a master story teller and that not just the devil but heaven itself is in the details. He honed his craft by telling those tales of his ten thousand times or more. Polish your best stories and have them always at the ready to tell. Someone is as hungry to hear them as you are to tell them. What better way is there to entertain ourselves along this continuing journey in the company of friends than sharing our stories.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
