The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – Chapter 1

Today I begin a classic children story treat, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Those who have never read or heard it read have some big surprises in store for there is so much more in the book than in the beloved movie. I first read the book to my dearly departed daughter Emily when she was just a little girl. She loved the movie, but was an even greater fan of the book and all the Oz books. She loved all the songs from movie, not just the hauntingly beautiful Over The Rainbow song that almost did not make it into the movie.

The land over the rainbow that Dorothy heard of once in a lullaby was not Oz but Heaven. Imagine the hapless traveler from a colorless Kanas prairie waking up in the full technicolor kingdom of Oz and her shock to find out that the evil wicked witch of the East, whom her house had just landed on and killed, had an even more evil sister, the Wicked Witch of the West. In Oz, Dorothy also finds that there are lions, and tigers, and bears – oh my, and evil trees, flying monkeys, and an assorted host of bad guys but also a good witch, a wonderful Wizard and three especially good friends and travel companions.

Buckle your seat belts, and hold on for the adventure of a life time as we begin the wonderful journey to the land of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
