Winnie-the-Pooh All Year Long

Winnie-the-Pooh All Year Long

When I was a boy, as many children raised as I was, I loved Christmas, the tinsel, the lights and all the presents. In spite of the let down after all the presents were opened and the Christmas feast was consumed I began immediately counting off the days till the next Christmas. I have come to believe that thinking life is poo all year long till one brief magical day arrives is no way to live. Rather, we should see the gift in every day, the present.

Of all the creatures that inhabit this sphere mankind alone has the most trouble keeping focused on the moment when in reality it is this eternal moment that matters most and if we miss the gift in it we have not just missed Christmas but missed it all.

My wife and I only saw four family members this Christmas and even those two at a time, her mom and sister in the morning, and our son and his fiancé in the evening. Both encounters were filled with holiday joy. We texted and talked to several others throughout the day by phone.

Boxing Day will be a limited contact day as well due to Covid around the world and in our home but there will be time to savor this precious moment also. I hope each of you, as you take stock of your lives and especially this year of so much loss of life will remember to look for the gift. Look in the mirror – “Hot, hotter, you’re burning up.” It was right in front of your eyes all along. Life’s greatest gift is you and that is no poo.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
