What A Mess Social Media Has Wrought
Yesterday I mentioned Twitter and Facebook. For over two years now I have not been actively using my Facebook account though I still get several texts and emails daily trying to lure me back. I had gotten on Facebook years ago, encouraged by my daughter Emily, then living, with promises of a connection to old friends and pictures of what was going on in hers and their lives. I found it fun at first but incredibly time consuming with not much in the way of real connection to others so I quickly left that first time. In 2015 I got on Facebook again to try to build a platform for publishing a book about Emily, then three years deceased, that I loving and appropriately called, “Emily, The Little Girl Who Sang Her Song To Anyone Who Came Along.” I had just started a blog trying to build a 10,000 plus following that a book I read about building a platform said was necessary to get published these days by a publishing company, one who pays you to publish your work, and not the other way around.
I stuck with Facebook over two years that time witnessing the selling of America to foreign interest as Russian false Facebook accounts widened the already great divide in this country and helped sway a very close Presidential election. The only ones who deny this are Trump and his devout followers, never numbering then nor now enough to elect a President.
Fear is what Facebook peddled for profit, not for family and certainly not for friendly connections. Profit has taken the place of conscience and power the place of faith to many who support a man whose compass only points to his own profit. The Chinese, Russians, or anyone wanting to hurt the United States no longer need armies, navies, planes, and bombs to take over this country. They did it on Facebook and other Social Media that helped make a con-man in a red Make America Great Again baseball cap look like the new Messiah to some in a few key states itching to turn the White House, white again. Only the people who thought it heresy to have a black (half white really) or a woman President at the top ever thought it was not great already and still. Barack Obama was born in Hawaii by the way, but “Birther” Donald Trump built upon on that lie a bid for the Oval Office. Remember when he formally announced he was running and called all illegal immigrants from Mexico rapists? Another great con-man, Adolph Hitler, wrote in his book often simplified as, “The bigger the lie you tell the more people will believe it.”
The actual quote for those interested follows:
“All this was inspired by the principle—which is quite true within itself—that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.
It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying.”
— Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, vol. I, ch. X
If Hitler had had Facebook we might all be speaking German today and tweeting in German.
I still look at Tweets from time to time. Only those of Sarah Silverman, a lovely Jewish Lady, and a few others. I think she is pretty, sassy, so intelligent, and funny – a quadruple threat that woman. If only she could be persuaded to run for President and help us toss the Trumpster in the dumpster. Well, I can dream can’t I?
I will not waste another moment of my life on Facebook, or opposing anyone, Trump, or his supporters. Friends, you have my numbers, call me, text me, or email me if you want to stay in touch or share an encouraging word, a picture of your cat, a grand child, or all three. I’ll be here writing blogs, singing songs, writing poems and sharing my more encouraging opinions, hopefully as best as I can. My opinions are of no more value than anyone else’s, but I can assure you they are in no way being influenced by profit or foreign powers. I come up with this stuff free of charge and completely on my own for better or worse.
I hope history will put an asterisk on this current Presidency to distinguish it from all others. Not because he or we were on steroids but because I believe, and there is evidence to support it, that the electorate was played and unduly swayed by foreigners masquerading as friends on Facebook.
The picture quote today says best what I tried to say in over a thousand words.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
