Misunderstanding Selfishness

What we label selfishness in ourselves and others is most often only pettiness or smallness our real problem being that we are not selfish enough in its highest best form. Our biggest problems always stem not from loving ourselves too much but not enough. We are told and often that loving God or others more than we love ourselves is the answer to our “problem” with selfishness. But my understanding of the two great commandments that Jesus purposed to supersede all the others is that we: “Love God with all our heart soul mind and strength and others as we love ourselves.” I count three love commandments there: Love God, others, and self. Actually the first two are qualified loves – as we love ourselves, meaning I think we can only love God and others as we love ourselves. We are taught in this very mixed up environment that we find ourselves in that love is a hierarchical thing, that we are to love people, animals, things in that order and One Person above all others.

Call me crazy, many have, and I even do so myself and quite often, but there is a certain justification for believing that there is only One Person, and that one containing all persons, animals, things, places. God is “all in all” the old book says and even science says everything is made of the same stuff and relative in this time and space construct, this Universe. Even supposing there are multiverses, they too are part of the greater and all encompassing One.

In my head I hear many voices the one at the mike now is Bob Marley singing “One Love.”

One love, one heart

Let’s get together and feel all right

As it was in the beginning

So shall it be in the end

Let’s get together and feel all right

Let them all pass all their dirty remarks (one love)

There is one question I’d really like to ask (one heart)

Is there a place for the hopeless sinner

Who has hurt all mankind just to save his own?

Believe me

One love, one heart

Let’s get together and feel all right

As it was in the beginning

So shall it be in the end

One love, one heart

Let’s get together and feel all right

Let’s get together to fight this holy Armageddon

When the man comes there will be no no doom

Have pity on those whose chances grove thinner

There ain’t no hiding place from the father of creation

One love, one heart

Let’s get together and feel all right

Songwriters: MARLEY BOB

Bob, I think, nailed it with that song. One Self and all of us and everything but a part of the Greater One and yet we must love our part to feel our connection to any other part and to the whole. And what a wonderful, wonderful, world we discover when we do.

What A Wonderful World

And it would be so much the less without you. But it never can be, for He, She, We, you, and I are One. Quite impossible to be selfish if we understand Who and Whose we really are.

Your friend and fellow traveler,
