The Way You Look Tonight
I have mentioned and will probably continue to as long as I have breath that songs and song lyrics are quite literally the song-track to my life. Not only shall he have flowers wherever he goes but poetry and music too. I love words and when put to music it is magical the way that they slip past those old crusty and rigid ideas and beliefs most of us have hanging around in the cob Webb’s of our minds and open us up to a world of love, wonder, and possibilities. No wonder scenes like the one in which Humphrey Bogart says that so often misquoted line, “Play It Sam” play again and again in our collective consciousness. “As Time Goes By” was their song but it is our song too. Ironically it like, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, almost did not make it into their respective movies. Both are songs in so many of our life sound-tracks.
The Way You Look Tonight, is just such a song for many of us too, whether we are old enough to remember hearing Sinatra sing it or the 2003 cover by Michael Bublé. I saw fifteen artists listed from 1926 to 2008 and the one version I hear most often in my head is Rod Stewart’s 2002 hit.
“Some day, when I’m awfully low
When the world is cold
I will feel a glow just thinking of you
And the way you look tonight.”
Your friend and fellow traveler,
And lover of the words, music, myself, and you,
