Casting A Larger Shadow

“My life is brilliant. My life is brilliant. My love is pure.” Those are the first three lines of James Blunt’s, “You’re Beautiful” Song. It takes a brilliant light to cast a long shadow. And I believe we need to crank up the light a bit so that we too can cast a longer, larger shadow in our wake.

You’re Beautiful

We all like the servants in the Talent Story attributed to Jesus of Nazareth, have at least one gift or talent. And, yes, I was a Bible student for many years, so I know that the “talent” in the story is talking about a piece of money that was designated a talent. The three servants were given money and instructed to be good stewards of it until their master returned. When he returned several years later from an extended journey he ask for an accounting. The first servant said to his master that he had invested the three talents left in his charge and made an additional two from his investments. The second servant said he had put the two talents left in his charge in the bank and had earned one in interest. The third servant who had been given only one talent to look after said that he knew his master was a hard man, reaping where he had not sown, and so fearfully he had hid the talent in the ground and still had it to give back to his master. The master bragged on the first two for making him money with his money but the third one he called a lazy and worthless servant and took the one talent away from him and gave it to the first one who had earned him already two more.

I must have heard about a hundred sermons from people who thought the talents were literally abilities or gifts and that hiding them would cause us to lose them altogether. Though the talent in the story was really money those sermons nonetheless made a good point. If we fail to use an ability like muscle mass we will lose it if we do not use it. If you can sing – sing, dance – dance, draw – draw, write – write etc., etc. The world of love, art, and ability is all less if you fail to contribute your talents, your gifts. To quote another favorite New Testament verse, “We have these treasures in earthen vessels that the excellency might be of God.”

Brilliant, my life, your life is brilliant. Oh, do let it shine, shine, shine. As the children’s chorus goes, “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine..”

Your friend and fellow traveler,

Known by some as The White Shadow or Shad for short,

  1. Casting a larger shadow can be happy or sad!! Depends on whar kind of day YOU are or can be having on thar day. I used to think “casting a larger shadow was because someone was trying to “feel” stronger or braver when they weren’t😞🙋
