Whatever Did You Expect?

Jesus once said to a Roman centurion who came to him seeking help for his devoted servant, “Be it unto you even according to your word.” The man familiar with authority had heard of Jesus and believed that Jesus could command and his word would be obeyed and the story goes that he spoke to Jesus asking him to heal his servant and said, “I am not worthy that you should come to my house, just say the word and my servant will be whole for I am a man under authority and I say to this or that one go or come and they obey.” Jesus after granting the centurion’s request told the crowd, “I have not found so great a faith in all of Israel.”

The centurion expected his servant to be healed because he believed not only that Jesus had the power to do it but that he would not be refused. What do you expect when you ask for something? In another place speaking of the great goodness of God, the Universe, Jesus said, “ If a child asks for bread will a loving father give them a stone?”

Our biggest problem getting exactly what we want is not with The Giver, nor with a shortage of supply, but with what we expect. What comes to us if we we look at it closely, is exactly what we expect. Expect trouble, lack, shortage, problems – you got it. How do we change all that? Easy really, by just changing our minds, our expectations, our thoughts. Or as Mike Dooley says, “Thoughts become things, choose the good one.”

It is a natural process for all kinds of wild and wonderful thoughts to come to us. Depending on our past experiences, hopes, and dreams sometimes even dark and foreboding thoughts. But what comes to us in reality are the thoughts we choose to dwell on. Working hard or worrying hard only gets us calluses and more stress. What brings peace, joy, abundance, and a satisfied mind is entertaining the best and brightest thoughts always and letting go all the rest. And, Child, believe me our divine parent only wants the best for us. Whatever did you expect? “If there is anything lovely…think on these things.”
