Almost Christmas Time

This has for as long as I can remember been one of my most favorite times of the year. In one of Karen Carpenter’s song she sings, “Like a child’s eyes on a Christmas night, I’m looking at you now, finding answers to my prayers.” E.T.’s and all of our heart lights seem to grow especially bright at Christmas time.

One of the most often asked questions of adults this time of year when I was a child was, “What do you want for Christmas?” And at the risk of sounding like a beauty contest finalist my answer is “World peace.” But then a song I heard as a teen seems to provide the answer to that Christmas wish when it says, “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” There is no underestimating the power and influence of a heart at peace.

Just a few days before his great trial Jesus offer the boys and us all some parting advice. He said, “Let not your heart be trouble, believe in God, believe also in me, in my Father’s house are many rooms. I go to prepare a place for you.” Like most of you I am not ready to go Home or to my room just yet. I have, I hope, many adventures in this life and perhaps several more to accomplish first but I take comfort in the knowledge that I am guided, guarded, protected, and loved. And that there is a warm, welcome place for me always in my loving Parent’s house.

Christmas time is not just for Christians and neither was the the angels announcement of “Peace on earth good will to men.” Some interpreting the angels exclamation to mean “Peace on earth to men of good will” have tried to limit the love of God to only the “good guys” whoever they are supposed to be. I especially like the lyrics of Gene Autry’s song Here Comes Santa Claus because he sings “Santa knows we’re all God’s children and that makes everything right.” Let us not allow anyone to rob us of our peace, even and especially ourselves, for it is our birthright and not just at Christmas time or for a few but for everyone, everyday, and in every way. “God bless us everyone.”

Say it with me, “I chose to recognize the peace I have in my heart and to see it fill my world, no matter what.”

Have a peaceful Christmas Time.

David White
